The world we're working towards

A fair, sustainable society where everyone can thrive

We believe in the importance of belonging: to a community, to a place, to the natural world. Being safe in your home, feeling connected to and inspired by nature, and mattering to society: these are the foundations on which people and places can truly flourish.

Our Organisation

Why we work this way

Driving systemic change

Systemic change means creating deep, lasting shifts in how whole systems work, not just addressing individual issues.

Many of the challenges communities experience, including housing, access to nature and education, are shaped by how systems operate. They are complex and evolve over time. Our experience shows they benefit from coordinated, collaborative approaches. Long-term investment and strong relationships can help create the conditions for meaningful and lasting progress.

Through our relational, collaborative approach, we work towards three core outcomes:

How we work

Relational. Long-term. Collaborative.

How we work is as important as what we fund. We do more than give grants; we actively connect people around complex challenges, listening, convening and learning to spark unusual collaborations that build collective knowledge, generate new solutions and create lasting, connected impact.

Part of the Wates family

Wates Logo

Wates Family Enterprise Trust is part of the wider family of Wates philanthropy – sharing the family’s long-held values.

We are not the Wates Foundation, although we work closely together. We are an independent, registered charity with our own mission and strategy, guided by eight engaged family trustees. We take a relational, collaborative approach across three themes: homes, inclusive education and nature-based neighbourhoods.

As a small, highly skilled team, we use our expertise, insight and convening power to strengthen sector knowledge and help drive meaningful, lasting change.

Governance and policies

We are committed to operating openly and responsibly. On this section you’ll find our key policies and governance documents.

Please note: we do not accept unsolicited funding applications.
